This handsome Georgian Campaign Writing Slope would probably have belonged to a high ranking officer in the military, or a rich gentleman of the period.
Dating from around 1840 or earlier, this Writing Slope is constructed of solid mahogany (no veneer) with brass banding, corner protectors, and an ornate vacant cartouche that repeats around the key escutcheon.
The interior is fitted with a pleasing burgundy brushed writing surface in excellent order, a pen tray, stamp slope, two inkwell compartments, and one ink bottle. The top writing board has a separate lock securing the three secret drawers beneath and any stored papers or documents. There is also a secret side drawer which is accessed by releasing a retaining pin.
