Elegant Victorian Writing Slope in walnut, secret drawers, ink bottles, working lock with key.

A super Victorian Writing Slope in walnut, circa 1850.

This beautiful looking box has a very attractive walnut grain, good colour and patination. It has a vacant brass cartouche to the lid (which could be engraved) with a matching key escutcheon, brass edging and inlaid stringing, all in extremely good order.

The box opens to reveal the original dark red/burgundy leather writing surface/skiver which is in very good order with minimal wear and no cracks on the fold line. Interior fittings include two brass-capped ink bottles (omitted to add, will provide a revised photograph in due course) two inkwell compartments, one open storage compartment useful for paper clips, a pen tray and leather covered pen gulley. There is also a secret compartment that conceals two small drawers, used in olden days to hide coins and small items of value. Beneath the writing boards there are two storage areas. New green baize has been fitted to the base to protect furniture. The box has a functioning lock with the original key.
