NOW SOLD!  Please see our available Writing Slopes.  A very impressive Napoleonic, Georgian, Officer’s military Writing Slope in solid mahogany. Tri-fold operation, secret drawers, inkwells, working lock with key.

This handsome military Officer’s Campaign Writing Slope dates from the Napoleonic wars, 1799-1815

Soundly constructed out of solid mahogany with screwed down mount re-enforcements, brass banding, and inset carrying handles at each end. This lovely box was designed to withstand the rigours of campaign life and the battlefield.

The exterior of the box has an attractive mahogany grain, good colour, and a pleasing aged patina. There are a couple of old indented battle scars to the lid along with the usual minor surface scratching, but these imperfections form part of its character. history, and use in the field.

The box has a tri-fold operation, opening to reveal a secondary mahogany writing surface for quick use, then opening again to reveal the main slope fitted with a dark red/burgundy baize writing surface which is in very reasonable condition and compliments the original interior.

The lid has an attractive vacant brass cartouche (which could be engraved) and a very special Thompson lock with a pressed maker’s mark key escutcheon, bearing the lion and the unicorn, Royal crest endorsement, and the Thompson patent. the lock works very smoothly with the original key.

The original interior is nicely fitted out with a dark red leather drop-down section in the lid which features Monday- Friday memo/aide memoire pockets, this section can be lowered to reveal a document wallet and a letter web. The interior of the box has a secret compartment that conceals four small drawers which could be used to conceal coins and small items of value. Interior fittings include: two inkwell compartments, a pen tray, nib box and nib rest. There are also two brass-capped inkwells and two letter webs in the storage areas beneath the writing boards.

Dimensions.

Length:  50cm

Width:  26cm

Height:  17cm

Condition.

In very good antique condition. As previously mentioned, there are a couple of indented battle scars to the lid along with some surface scratching, but nothing that seriously affects the overall appearance of the box which is impressive. There is a minor shrinkage crack in the base but this is very common and of no real concern. There are also a few ink spots in the leather interior of the lid, but again, this is very common and commensurate with age and use.

A beautiful Writing Slope to use and display.
